What is An Agapé Meal?

  • An Agapé Meal is a simple, shared meal among Christians that celebrates Christian love and fellowship. In the Episcopal Church, it is usually:
    • Informal and prayerful
    • Centered on scripture and thanksgiving
    • Separate from the Eucharist (it is not Holy Communion)
    • Focused on community, unity, and Christ’s love
  • The word Agapé is a Greek word meaning self-giving, unconditional love — the kind of love Christians believe God shows to the world.
  • In short: An Agapé Meal is a simple meal shared in gratitude and love, reminding us that we belong to Christ and to one another.
